It was supposed to be a small, informal session but some big names took to the air during Indy Squadron gaming on July 7.
Five players showed up for three games, with five kills scored, two pilots reaching experienced status and two more nearing acehood.
Game 1
Oct 1918
Ethan and Stephen Dale flew British SE 5a's against the Fokker DVII's of Dory and Rick, who were escorting the DFW CV two-seat recon plane flown by Stephen.
The game lasted only three turns with both SE's going down. Stephen Dale's rookie was fatally pilot hit by Dory's 5th-mission DVII pilot, while Ethan flew his SE in for an attack on the DFW and was downed with a head wound.
Rick's pilot, Horst Weigel, disregarded a nasty critical hit in the tail of his Fokker and hung in the fight. He was the ranking pilot in the game and returned safely from his 11th mission.
March 1917
Dory's Albatros pilot was unstoppable, dishing out a fatal abdominal wound to Rick's Nieuport 17 pilot on the first turn before inflicting a critical head wound on Ethan's Nieuport pilot a few minutes later for a double kill. Stephen's FE 2b crew put up a stout fight and send Stephen Dale's Albatros pilot down in a fatal spin.
Of the five airplanes starting the mission, only Stephen's FE 2b and Dory's Albatros survived.
Game 3
July 1918
This mission was flown on the Italian front. Stephen's Austro-Hungarian Oeffag Albatros pilot, Milan Sova (6/2), put hard hits into the Hanriot flown by Dory early in the game. Her pilot, Alfredo Russelli (9/1) dates to the original Italian front mini-campaign flown at the Indy Squadron 20 years ago. How cool is that?
Sova (Stephen Dale) then scored another major hit on the Caproni Ca.36 four-seat bomber flown by Stephen, whose pilot and aft gunner survived the game to complete their 12th missions. They are believed to be the only experienced Caproni crewmen the game has ever seen.
Ethan's Hanriot HD-1 then scored a critical hit on Sova, who was forced to escape. Rick's 3rd-mission Oeffag Albatros pilot struggled with gun jams but returned safely.
The Fits Society's warm up for Gen Con kicks off on Weds, August 15 at Union Station in downtown Indianapolis.
All Indy Squadron players are encouraged to attend. Keep an eye on the Indy Squadron Forum for details on the exact starting time, which is expected to be released soon by society organizers.
