News & Notes for Red Baron Fight XXXIV
- As the winner of the Whosyercon Open earlier this month, Ethan Skinner is now the only person capable of earning the Indy Squadron Triple Crown (winning the Whosyercon Open, Red Baron Fight and Armistice Day Fits Tournament in the same year).
- Dory Oda is the defending Red Baron Fight champion and she will be gunning for her third career RBF title this weekend.
- 2021 RBF co-champ Stephen Dale is working in Kentucky this weekend and will be unable to pursue his fourth Silver Goblet.
- Four-time winner Rick Lacy will be on hand, as well as 2019 squadron champ Bob Meister, rookie Dawn Patrol player Charles Teague, former champ Stephen Skinner and possibly Ben and Jonathon Shepherd.
- Don't worry about bringing food. Please bring $12 per person and enjoy the daylong snacks, beverages, desserts and grilling of our host, Nelson Skinner. If you don't happen to have $12 on you, don't worry. No big deal. The squadron fund will cover it. There's plenty of food to keep everyone full all day long - and no nearby restaurants of any kind.
- Charles Teague has the chance to become the first rookie RBF winner in 14 years. The feat hasn't been accomplished since Michael Morgan won his inaugural outing in 2009.
- This year's Silver Goblet is made of stainless steel rather than pewter. It will look and feel the same, but pewter cups start at $50-75 each before engraving while stainless steel cups start at $20. Even at that price, the final product still came in at $40 after engraving and shipping. And unfortunately it will not arrive in time for this year's event. We will use last year's cup for photo ops and the winner will receive his own Silver Goblet when it arrives next week.
- Indy Squadron House Rules are a bit different than standard Dawn Patrol - mostly more strict on time and movement. Brushing up on house rules is a good idea, but the biggest differences can be summed up as follows: any player can invoke a 60-second time limit on any other player at any time, and there is no backwards movement. If your airplane counter physically moves into a square, it cannot move backwards even if that means the airplane crashes into the ground and kills its pilot. This helps separate those who pay attention from those who don't and rewards attentive players. Remember... planes don't fly backwards!
- The Indy Squadron Calendar (see sidebar on this site) is updated for 2023. We may get in a few more gaming days this year than usual.
- See you all Saturday for a great 34-year Dawn Patrol tradition!
