Indy Squadron Future Laid Out by ADFT Competitors

Volume 26, Number 1

The fate of the Indy Squadron was decided in November when, by unanimous vote, we chose to move from monthly gaming to quarterly gaming. The options on the table were to continue on a monthly basis, to shut down the squadron permanently, or to come up with an alternate plan.

Given everyone's personal schedules, Stephen's work schedule, and overall diminished participation recently, gaming monthly was judged to be too much. On the other hand, no one wanted to shut down the squadron. The alternative plan was to commit to a 4-event annual schedule. The anchors on the schedule would be, as always, the Armistice Day Tourney in November and Red Baron Fight in April.

This left us with two events to schedule, and we needed to somewhat evenly space the two additional gaming days in order to achieve quarterly gaming. It was quickly decided that our first games should be at WhosYerCon, the Indianapolis-based, free gaming convention on the west side in February. Since WhosYerCon is now an official date on the Indy calendar, all games will be run under squadron rules. The remaining event will be scheduled between August and October to balance the schedule as personal schedules allow.

Rather than hold two special events and two "regular" gaming days, the squadron will now have a scored, themed game at each of our four events. The new events will be scored and will name a champion, but carry far less emphasis than RBF and Armistice Day. They will be considerably less formal, but give everyone something to look forward to at our new events. Unlike RBF and Armistice Day, our new events are not designed to take up the entire day. Rather, they will hopefully take about as much time as an average game.

The first new event is the "WhosYerCon Open." The scenario and plot will change each year, along with ammunition shortages to shorten the game. This is intended to be a set-up game with assigned aircraft and a specific scenario. It can be anything from a straight up dogfight to a bombing mission or a balloon strafe. The idea is to have something fun, quick, and new each year. Hopefully we can support WhosYerCon with this event.

The second new event is the "Chart Patrol Classic." The oldest, classical style of Dawn Patrol is to simply roll up a random game from the Master Scenario Charts. Sometime during the gaming day, we will roll up a scenario that everyone finds appealing. We'll dub that game the "Chart Patrol Classic," throw in ammo shortages to keep things moving, and score it to name a winner as an homage to the classical random game roll-up that is the backbone of Dawn Patrol.

The only prizes will be perhaps a set of dice or a certificate so as not to overshadow our major events. Hopefully these new events are broad enough to support any idea that anyone wants to offer.

We look forward to seeing you at WhosYerCon on February 22nd for the 1st WhosYerCon Open!
