Red Baron Fight FAQ's

Red Baron Fight FAQ's

Who can play in RBF?
Everyone. There are no eligibility requirements.

Does everyone fly as a 2nd mission pilot?
No. Your pilot will fly with all the standard characteristics for his skill level. If he is an ace, he may fully utilize all ace advantages.

Is that really fair?
No, but this is not a tournament; it is a special event commemorating the death of Manfred von Richthofen. Red Baron Fight is a very dangerous game. The mortality rate is higher than any other Indy Squadron event and the faint of heart may want to reconsider. On the other hand, it has been a proving ground for some of the best new pilots in the game and the defining moment for some of Dawn Patrol's greatest aces. Surviving a Red Baron Fight is an achievement in itself.

Why are the British sometimes outnumbered in RBF?
In the actual dogfight on April 21st, 1918, RAF 209's Camels were badly outnumbered by a mixture of Albatros fighters and Fokker DrI's.

Explain the tradition of flying aces in RBF. Do I have to fly an ace in this game?
No, you can fly any pilot you like. No one is really certain how the tradition started, but since the very first Red Baron Fight many people have opted to fly some of the best pilots on their roster. Although the game was not designed for this reason, RBF has turned into something of an All-Star event.

What does the winner get?
Every RBF winner gets an engraved championship cup or goblet and automatic induction into the RBF Hall of Fame. Although the Silver Goblet and Hall of Fame induction are the most cherished honors, in recent years the prize package has grown far beyond that to include an array of prizes.

Does RBF really offer the best winner's purse in the history of Dawn Patrol?
Yes, at least for the past several years. Recent games have offered over $400 worth of prizes. And RBF winners take home quality stuff. The winner's goblet is normally plated with genuine silver. Most of the limited edition lithographs offered to our winners are autographed by the artist and some of the books are as well. All books offered as RBF prizes are new, not used. Free dice, gaming store gift certificates, pilot honors including medals and promotions, recognition in the Indy Squadron Dispatch and Hall of Fame, and many other commendations have also been offered.

Is RBF a winner-take-all event?
No. Depending on the number of participants, prizes are usually distributed among the top three finishers.

Why does the player flying the all-red DrI get a free parachute and an extra tailing defense maneuver card?
For the first several years of this event, a special "I Shot the Red Baron" certificate was offered to anyone who could gun down the red DrI (no one ever won it and eventually it was forgotten). As a result, the airplane quickly became a prime target for every British pilot at the table. It was also held that the Red Baron should have some superlative ability that would make him special, but we hesitated to grant him offensive powers that could hurt other players. It was therefore decided to grant him special defensive abilities that could not harm anyone else, but might help the "Red Baron" player survive and give him some distinction.
